James L. (Sonny) Buchanan became the second victim of the sniper attacks in the Washington Metropolitan Area in October 2002. To honor his memory and continue his work with children through the Montgomery County Boys & Girls Clubs, Sonny’s Kids Foundation, Inc. (SKF) was formed as a Maryland non-profit corporation that is a public charitable organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its Federal Employer Tax ID number is 05-0535125.

The mission of the Sonny’s Kids Foundation, Inc., is to help children and young adults achieve their goals through education. The Sonny’s Kids Foundation, Inc. seeks to accomplish its mission by funding several scholarships and other educational programs for children and young adults as well as offering grants to schools and other institutions for projects to further their educational opportunities. Our Annual Scholarship Essay Contest and Sonny’s Kids Mark Twain School G.E.D. Program are the means toward achieving this mission.
